AI Signals #23 Reasoning Models, Scaling Workloads, and Beating Bias

Agenda

06:30pm - Doors open, food and drink served

07:00pm - Welcome

07:05pm - Chaitanya Pathak, Leads by Analyttica "The Evolution of Reasoning from System 1 to System 2 Thinking in Large Language Models (LLMs)"

The shift from System 1 to System 2 thinking is essential in overcoming some of the inherent limitations of current LLMs, such as susceptibility to bias, overgeneralization, and errors in complex tasks that require nuanced understanding or multi-step reasoning. In this session, we will explore how LLMs are transitioning to more sophisticated forms of reasoning, including how they handle ambiguous queries, adapt to novel contexts, and generate more thoughtful, context-aware responses.

07:45pm - Break

08:00pm - Ben Gamble, Ververica "Scaling AI workloads with Flink."

Ben’s talk will run though why Flink is a great tool for handling AI powered services and especially Agentic systems. He will talk about data, events, and semantics.

08:40 - Damien Jade Duff, Daemon "Beyond multi-agent systems: well-designed AI systems delivering value"

Multi-agent systems are currently trending and they do have their uses and an interesting future, but equally they are being thrown with little thought at problems for which modern AI approaches that have been carefully designed and well-tested. Here I give our experience of use cases where we have used good practice and wit to orchestrate LLMs for use cases around knowledge distillation, data extraction, and controllable customer-facing solutions.

AI and Deep Learning for Enterprise #22

Agenda

06:30pm - Doors open, food and drink served

07:00pm - Welcome

07:05pm - Lu Wilson. TLDraw "Beyond chat: Bringing models to the canvas"

Whenever a new technology appears, our first instinct as developers is to offer "text" as the primary method of interaction. This has happened throughout computing history, with the computer terminal, with early smartphones, and now it's happening again with AI.
At tldraw, we’ve been working on moving AI interaction away from the chat-based interface, towards a richer canvas environment. It hasn't been easy! I'll show you all the challenges we've faced, and how we're currently overcoming them. Some of the solutions have been surprising.

07:45pm - Break

08:00pm - Wendy Mak. Senior Data scientist at the Stepstone Group "SetFit for efficient few-shot classification"

08:40 - Sean Tracey, Bacalhau "Generating alt-text with LVMs for Bluesky with Bacalhau"
alt-text makes the web more accessible for everyone, but not everybody takes the time to describe content they upload to social media platforms. So, we thought "Wouldn't it be great if we can use AI to automate that for people a touch?" And that's what we've done! Using Bacalhau.org and LLaVA (a Large Vision Model), we've built a Bluesky Bot which can generate alt-text for any image on Bluesky with just a single post!

Agenda

06:30pm - Doors open, food and drink served

07:00pm - Welcome

07:05pm - Rachel Lee Nabors, Fractional Developer Experience Leader "AI/ML Cram Session"

What do acronyms like RAG and GPT really mean? What is the math behind the “magic” of deep learning? What is a “perceptron” and why is it called a “neural network?” This talk demystifies AI’s field of machine learning for AI-curious technical and non-technical audiences alike. The concepts, mental models, and history needed to grok are colorfully illustrated and explained. From the award-winning cartoonist turned engineer/keynote speaker who has taught millions of developers via react.dev and MDN.

07:45pm - Break

08:00pm - Rhea Mendonca, MSc in Data Science Greenwich University "Unlocking the Potential of Dark Data with Machine Learning"

This talk will focus on how machine learning can unlock the untapped potential of dark data—vast amounts of collected but unused information stored by organizations. I will explain how machine learning techniques can process and analyze this complex, unstructured data to uncover valuable insights that traditional methods often overlook. Through real-world examples from industries like healthcare, finance, and education, I will demonstrate how dark data can drive innovation, improve decision-making, and offer a competitive advantage.
Additionally, I will address the ethical considerations and challenges that come with harnessing dark data, including privacy concerns and data management. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to begin leveraging dark data within their own organizations, transforming it from a hidden resource into a powerful tool for growth and discovery.

08:40 - Jason Chao, Director, Hongkongers in Britain (HKB) "Understanding immigrants' challenges with help from LLM"
Jason will share HKB's journey of building a tool that summarises and translates UK Hongkongers' discussions of their challenges. The talk will touch on the role of GPT-4o in this tool and the approach to ensuring participants' anonymity. The tool's output will help UK policymakers/local authorities understand UK Hongkongers' settlement challenges in a timely manner.
